Exploring the interactions between ADHD, emotion regulation, and addictive behaviors. Study of two young adults
There is a strong link between ADHD, emotional dysregulation, and addictions. Substance users, whether ADHD sufferers or not, perceive positive effects on their emotions and mood. ADHD increases the risk of developing difficulties related to the use of psychoactive substances, probably due to poor impulse and emotional control and self-medication of symptoms. In adulthood, the persistence of ADHD is often associated with a higher prevalence of polysubstance dependence. We believe that treating these patients from an early age for ADHD symptoms, of which emotional regulation seems to be a key component, provides emotional reinforcement and reduces ADHD symptoms. The impact of these disorders on the loved ones of those affected suggests that greater involvement of family and friends, from a psycho-educational and support point of view, is warranted. Effective treatment of this comorbid population requires a multimodal approach that addresses both ADHD and emotional disorders, as well as addictive tendencies.
