Spirituality and psychotropic drugs: 12-step self-help group and Santo Daime, comparison trial

This article compares two approaches: on the one hand, abstinence support groups, and on the other, Santo Daime’s neo-shamanism. Common points seem to exist between these two “communities”. We will see how psychotropic drugs and spiritualities fit together and show what reflection this parallel inspires in us – namely, to strengthen the role of spirituality with regard to addiction as alienation and re-register the uses of psychotropic drugs in sacred and ritualized forms.
